What notification settings does PostSnag have?

PostSnag sends an in-app and email notification when a big export finishes, plus toggles in Settings for the updates you want to hear about.

PostSnag sends you an in-app and email notification the moment a large export finishes running, so you don't have to sit and watch the tab while it works. Beyond that, Settings > Notifications in your dashboard has toggles for the kinds of updates you want to hear about, so you can choose what shows up and what doesn't.

This article covers both: the export-ready notification and the toggles you control yourself.

Export-ready notifications

When you export a lot at once, your entire Posts library, a large group, or a profile with a long capture history, PostSnag runs that export as a background job instead of making you wait on the page. You're free to keep working, close the tab, or move to another part of the dashboard while it finishes.

Once the export is ready, PostSnag lets you know two ways:

  • In-app, with a notification you'll see the next time you're in the dashboard.
  • By email, sent to the address on your account, so you'll know even if you've logged out.

Smaller exports, a quick Markdown or CSV pull from a single profile, typically finish fast enough that you don't need a notification; the download starts right away. The in-app and email notifications matter most for the bigger pulls, the kind covered in How do big exports and export notifications work?

The notification toggles in Settings

Open Settings > Notifications to choose which updates PostSnag sends you. The toggles cover things like new posts from the profiles you track, activity in your groups, bookmark milestones, and product news from PostSnag itself. Turn off whatever categories you don't want to hear about, and leave on whatever you do.

These toggles are about the updates PostSnag proactively sends you. The export-ready notification above works differently: it's tied to a background job finishing, not to a preference you set here.

Your preferences save automatically

Every toggle in Settings > Notifications saves the moment you change it, no separate save button needed. Flip a category off and PostSnag stops sending it; flip it back on and it resumes from then on. Export-ready notifications sit outside these toggles entirely, since they follow your own exports finishing rather than a category you can switch off.

Turning off email entirely

There's no single switch for "no emails at all" separate from the categories in Settings. To cut down on what you get, turn off each category you don't want individually. Export-ready emails are tied to your own exports finishing, so the practical way to avoid them is to not run a background export, which most people wouldn't want anyway, since it's the notification telling you your download is ready.

Where to manage notifications

Everything notification-related lives in one place: Settings > Notifications in your dashboard. There's no separate notification screen in the Chrome extension; the extension panel shows its own on-screen notices about scan limits and capture status while you're actively using it, which is a different thing from the account-level notifications covered here.

Common questions

Do I get an email every time I export something?

No. Small, quick exports finish while you're still on the page. The in-app and email notifications are for larger exports that run in the background.

Can I turn off export-ready emails but keep the in-app notification?

The two are meant to work together so you're covered whether or not you're in the dashboard when the export finishes. If you'd rather manage this differently, email support@postsnag.com.

Why am I not seeing a notification for something I expected?

Check that the relevant toggle in Settings > Notifications is turned on; toggles apply right away, so this is almost always the reason. Still not seeing it after confirming the toggle is on? Contact support@postsnag.com.

Does changing a notification toggle affect what PostSnag captures or exports?

No. Notification toggles only control what PostSnag tells you about; they have no effect on scanning, capturing, or exporting.

Is there a way to find an export-ready notification I might have missed?

Check both the in-app notification and your email inbox for the export in question. If you can't find either, the export itself should still be available from wherever you started it, so you can export again.
