Why does the PostSnag icon open a small popup instead of the panel?

The PostSnag icon opens the panel only on a signed-in Facebook tab. Anywhere else, or while signed out, it opens a small popup instead.

This is expected behavior, not a bug. The PostSnag icon opens the full panel only when you're on a facebook.com tab and signed in. Anywhere else, or while you're signed out, it opens a small popup instead, with sign-in and an Open Dashboard button.

Why this happens

PostSnag checks two things every time you click its icon: whether you're signed in, and whether the active tab is on facebook.com. Both have to be true for the panel to open.

  • Signed in and on Facebook: the icon opens the panel directly on the page.

  • Signed out, on any Facebook tab: the icon opens the small popup, so you can sign in first.

  • On any other website: the icon opens the small popup, no matter whether you're signed in, since there's no Facebook page for the panel to attach to.

The panel itself is a custom overlay PostSnag builds directly into Facebook's own page, not Chrome's built-in side panel feature. That's why it can only exist on a facebook.com tab in the first place; there's nowhere for it to appear anywhere else.

The panel can open on any facebook.com tab, not just profiles

Being signed in and on facebook.com is enough for the panel to open, even on pages PostSnag doesn't capture from, like Marketplace, Watch, or Notifications. If you open the panel somewhere like that, you'll see the empty state "Open a Facebook profile to start grabbing" instead of a captured-posts view, since there's nothing on that kind of page for PostSnag to capture. Head to a profile, Page, or group, and the panel switches into its normal capturing view.

How to get to the panel

  1. Go to a Facebook profile, Page, or group.

  2. Make sure you're signed in to PostSnag. If you see the sign-in screen instead, sign in with your email and password, or Continue with Google.

  3. Click the PostSnag icon again.

The panel opens directly on the page, and you'll see the Collected count and the Export To Dashboard button once it's up.

What the popup is for

The small popup isn't broken; it's the version of PostSnag you get whenever there's no Facebook page to show a panel on. From it you can sign in, see basic account info, and click Open Dashboard to open your dashboard in a new tab and browse everything you've already captured, without needing to be on Facebook at all. Think of the popup as the everywhere-else version of PostSnag, and the panel as the on-Facebook version.

Common questions

I'm on Facebook and I still only see the popup. What's wrong?
Confirm you're signed in first. The popup shows even on Facebook if you're signed out. Sign in from the popup, then click the icon again to open the panel.

Is the popup a bug?
No. It's the intended behavior anywhere PostSnag can't show the on-page panel, whether that's because you're off Facebook or not signed in yet.

Does the popup let me capture posts?
No. Capturing only happens through the panel on a Facebook page. Use the popup to sign in or open your dashboard, then head to a profile, Page, or group to capture.

I pinned PostSnag. Shouldn't that fix this?
No. Pinning only changes whether the icon is visible in your toolbar; it doesn't change what clicking it does. See "How do I pin PostSnag to my browser toolbar?"

Why does the panel show an empty state instead of my posts?
That happens if you open the panel on a Facebook page that isn't a profile, Page, or group, such as Marketplace or Watch, or if you're on a profile but haven't started scrolling yet. Head to a profile, Page, or group and scroll to start capturing.
