How do I export a Facebook Group's posts?

PostSnag exports a Facebook Group's posts through the Download Group Data button on the group's detail page. The Export menu has three options: Download data for AI (a Markdown file and a CSV file together), Download media for AI (a .zip of the images and videos), and Download Data & Media for AI (a .zip with both). Whichever you pick, the file downloads scoped to that group.

Export a Group's posts

1. Open Groups in your dashboard sidebar.

2. Click into the group whose posts you want.

3. Click Download Group Data near the top of the group's detail page.

4. Choose an option: Download data for AI, Download media for AI, or Download Data & Media for AI.

5. Wait for the file: Download data for AI builds in your browser and downloads right away. The two media options always run as a background job, even for a small group, and PostSnag notifies you in-app and by email when it's ready; the download link works for 7 days.

Choose your option

• Download data for AI: one download with a Markdown file and a CSV file together, built for pasting straight into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, or for sorting and filtering as a spreadsheet.

• Download media for AI: a .zip of the actual videos, reels, images, and album photos captured from the group, as real files.

• Download Data & Media for AI: a .zip with both the data files and the media together, so an AI can read the captions and watch the videos.

Whichever option you choose, video and reel captures include the real playable video file and a cover image, not just a thumbnail, along with the video's duration.

Two ways to export a group's posts, and they don't scope the same way

• The Download Group Data button on the group's detail page pulls everything captured from that group, in whichever option you pick.

• Multi-select on the group's Posts tab lets you tick specific posts, with a selection bar at the bottom. Only Download data for AI respects your selection there; Download media for AI and Download Data & Media for AI are built server-side from the group as a whole, so both always cover the entire group's media regardless of which posts you ticked. The bar labels this plainly, next to the two media buttons, so it isn't a surprise mid-download.

What's in the file

Download data for AI includes, per post: the author and username, the post's date, its type (text, photo, video, reel, album, or link), reactions, comments, shares, the caption text, and a direct link back to the post on Facebook, 9 columns in the CSV.

The reactions figure is a single total, not a breakdown by like, love, haha, wow, sad, and angry. Facebook only reliably exposes a couple of reaction types at a time, so PostSnag exports the combined total in the file. The full reaction breakdown is still visible in the app itself, on a post's card and in the group's Analytics tab, just not inside the exported file.

The Download Group Data button includes every post PostSnag has captured for that group; using multi-select to tick specific posts narrows Download data for AI to just those, though the two media options still cover the whole group either way.

When the Download Group Data button is disabled

If a group has no captured posts yet, the button is disabled with nothing to export. Capture at least one post from that group first, either by scrolling its feed or capturing a member from inside it, then send it to your dashboard. See How do I capture posts from a Facebook Group?.

Free plan: one of the three options is gated

On the Free plan, Download data for AI opens an upgrade prompt instead of downloading. Download media for AI and Download Data & Media for AI are not gated and work the same on every plan, matching whatever posts are unlocked and visible in your dashboard for that group. Export vs Export To Dashboard: two different things

PostSnag uses the word "export" for two different actions, worth keeping straight:

• Download Group Data, the button on a group's detail page (a profile page has Download Profile Data), downloads a file of posts already sitting in your dashboard. It's a file download.

• Export To Dashboard, the button in the extension panel, is what gets posts into your dashboard in the first place, by sending what you captured while scrolling Facebook.

You always capture and send posts to your dashboard with Export To Dashboard first. Downloading a group's file afterward is a later, optional step you can take anytime once its posts are already there, and you can do it again, in any option, as many times as you like.

How do I export a Facebook Group's posts?

Open the group's detail page in your dashboard, click Download Group Data, and choose Download data for AI, Download media for AI, or Download Data & Media for AI.

Can I export a Group's posts as Markdown?

Yes. Download data for AI gives you a Markdown file and a CSV file together in one download.

Why is the Download Group Data button disabled on a group's page?

That group has no captured posts yet. Capture at least one post from it, by scrolling its feed or capturing a member, and send it to your dashboard first.

Is this the same as the extension's Export To Dashboard button?

No. Export To Dashboard sends captured posts to your dashboard from the extension. A group's Download Group Data button downloads a file of posts already there.

If I tick only a few posts with multi-select, does the media zip only include those?

No, not for the two media options. They're built from the whole group on the server, so they always cover every post in the group regardless of your selection. Only Download data for AI is scoped to the posts you ticked.

Does the exported file include the reaction breakdown, like love or haha?

No. It includes the total reaction count only. The breakdown is visible in the app but isn't part of any exported file.
